Nelson and Kainoa Makua’s MANA 2023 Invitational Art Show is being held April 8–27 at the Wailoa Art Center in Hilo.
It will showcase artwork by noted island artists as well as Nelson and Kainoa.
The opening reception for artists and invited guests is from 4 to 6 p.m. on Friday, April 7.
The art show is open to the public starting Saturday, April 8. During the exhibit, the Wailoa Art Center will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays.
Artists invited to participate in MANA 2023 include Edwin Kayton, Kathy Long, Bernice Akamine, Christine Ahia, Jelena Clay, Phyllis Cullen, Stephen Davies, Scott Gorrell and Avalon Paradea, Pete Gorrell, Bonnie Sol Hahn, Scott Hare, Patti Pease Johnson, Beau Jack Key, Trish Helms Kimball, James Kanani Kaulukukui, Duncan Kaohu Seto, David Gallegos, Linda Rowell Stevens, Brandon Nonaka, Richard Mortemore, Catherine Robbins, Jamison Rosehill, Jane Taylor, Terry Bensch, Henry Bianchini, Nelson Makua and Kainoa Makua.
“Knowing so many creative people, we wanted to invite artists whose work reflected their mana,” said Nelson.
“Unlike most art shows, MANA 2023 is not a juried show.”
All of the art work was selected by the artists themselves, so they could submit art that they felt represented their mana.
The students of Ka ‘Umeke Ka‘eo PCS, a Hawaiian language charter school, are also invited to participate.
Their exhibit, which will be displayed in the Fountain Gallery, is a collaboration of student art works in diverse mediums featuring the mana of Hawaiian canoe plants.
Makua said, “We felt this would add a multi-generational perspective of what mana is.”
